Political Science Department - Bawaslu Holds Seminar on the Role of Students in Supervising the 2024 Elections
FISIP Online – The Political Science Program at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) UIN Jakarta, in collaboration with the General Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu), held a seminar on the role of students in supervising the 2024 elections on Monday (11/13/2023) at the Bahtiar Effendy Auditorium of FISIP UIN Jakarta.
By raising the theme “Bawaslu Ngampus: Peran Mahasiswa Dalam Pengawasan Partisipatif Menuju Sukses Pemilihan Umum Tahun 2024” this event invited Apria Roles Saputro (Bawaslu) and Dr. Idris Thaha (Lecturer at FISIP UIN Jakarta) as speakers. Also present at the event was the Dean of FISIP UIN Jakarta, Prof Dzuriyatun Toyibah.
Prof Dzuriyatun Toyibah, in her opening speech, stated that students, as agents of social change, play a crucial role in safeguarding democracy in Indonesia.
“Many factors make us very pessimistic about the current state of our democracy, where we are experiencing a decline in the democracy index,” she said.
Lately, she continued, we often hear narratives that make us feel as if we have to tolerate various practices that are actually undemocratic.
“Therefore, I hope that students can collaborate with various parties, especially Bawaslu, to continue monitoring the democratic process in Indonesia,” she expressed her hope.
Apria Roles Saputro in his presentation, invited students to take an active role in monitoring the 2024 elections. Participatory monitoring, he added, is one of Bawaslu's efforts by involving as many people as possible in overseeing the election process to minimize and prevent any form of violation.
“We invite all members of the community, including the current students, to actively participate in participatory monitoring,” he said.
"In line with Apria, Dr. Idris Thaha also stated that students, formally, should be able to prevent various types of violations in elections. 'Students can join formal institutions such as Bawaslu,' he said.
Based on FISIP Online observation, the participants appeared very enthusiastic about attending this event, Numerous questions posed by the seminar participants to the speakers.
